Acid house is a subgenre of house music that developed in around the mid-1980s by DJs from Chicago. The style is defined primarily by the "squelching" sounds and basslines of the Roland TB-303 electronic bass synthesizer-sequencer.

By 1985, House music encompassed Chicago DJ's, introducing Acid House. Acid house, a rougher and more abstract subgenre, arose from Chicago artist's experiments with the squelchy sounds of the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer that define the genre. The first Acid house records were produced in Chicago, Illinois. Phuture, is credited with having been the first to use the TB-303 in house music. London's club Shoom opened in November 1987 and was the first club to introduce Acid house to the clubbing public of the UK. In the late 80s and early 90s, British news media and tabloids devoted an increasing amount of coverage to the hedonistic Acid house rave scene.
