Blood, Sweat & Tears was founded in 1967 in New York, by Al Kooper, Jim Fielder, Fred Lipsius, Randy Brecker, Jerry Weiss, Dick Halligan, Steve Katz and Bobby Colomby. The debut performance at Cafe Au Go Go was a great success, because the audience was impressed by the different music styles that the band managed to combine. The Group was named after the eponymous album by Johnny Cash from 1963. After the band had gotten a record deal with Columbia Records released their first album, Child Is Father to the Man (1968). This album was incredibly well with critics, but was only moderately popular, because there were hardly pop-oriented songs on. Partly due to the disappointing sales figures started to show the relationships between the band members defects. Steve Katz and Al Kooper wanted that Columbia Records is no longer dealing with the vocals, but only organ still would play. The record company would then hire a professional singer in. This was the reason for Kooper left the band. Brecker and Weiss also left the band, because they got the chance to join the bands of Horace Silver and Ambergris respectively.
Columbia Records began to recruit a new singer and eventually opted for David Clayton-Thomas. With Chuck Winfield, Lew Soloff and Jerry Hyman there the band eventually had nine members. They released a second album, Blood, Sweat & Tears from 1969. That album had a lot more pop influences and was thereby more popular. The three singles from that album that were released, you've Made Me So Very Happy (acover version of a hit by Brenda Holloway), Spinning Wheel and And When I Die, were a success.
Due to the success of this second album, the group asked for a performance at Woodstock, the largest rock concert of the sixties. ' Blood, Sweat & Tears ' played there five songs and was fully for praise. [source?]
In 1970 a new album came out, but this was a flop compared to the previous two albums. The fourth album confirmed that the level of the band dropped, and made sure that there are again problems arose between the band members. Jerry Hyman was replaced by Dave Bargeron and the rest of the group split in a jazz group and a rock group. Singer Clayton-Thomas left the group to pursue a solo career. He was replaced by Bob Doyleagain after a few years, which in turn was replaced by Jerry Fisher. Fred Lipsius also left the band and was replaced by Joe Henderson and afterwards by Lou Marini, Jr., while Larry Willies for Dick Halligan replaced. George Wadenius was second guitarist. In the meantime, Columbia Records released a Greatest Hits album.
With the new formation was made the LP New Blood . This album flopped again, after which the Group decided to focus more on jazz music. This decision did not fall in the taste of Jim Fielder and Steve Katz, who therefore left the band. The albums No Sweat and Mirror Image sold bad, but David Clayton-Thomas came back. With him as singer was 'New City' again a success. Yet had the record company lost confidence in the group. The band now signed to ABC Records, the competitor of Columbia Records. When Bobby Colomby, the last original band member walked out in 1976 , could only Clayton-Thomas there still make sure that the band remained. In 2004 the band went on tour.
