Leslie Townes Hope (Eltham1903 – May 29, Toluca LakeJuly 27, 2003) was an American comedian.

As Bob Hope , he was one of the most famous American comedians of the 20th century. Bob Hope was a conferencier, which controlled all facets of the box. He acted as vaudeville actor, in Broadway-plays and musicals, in radio and television programmes and films.

He came in the world in Eltham, SoutheastLondon, the fifth of seven sons. His father was a Stonecutter and his mother sang in light operas. In 1907his family moved to ClevelandOhio in the United States. In 1920 he became an American citizen.

Early career[Edit][]

At the age of 10 he won a Charlie Chaplinimitation contest. After high school he took dance classes at King Rastus Brown and Johnny Root. He turned out to be a natural.

At eighteen he gave dance performances with his then-girlfriend Mildred Rosequist in Cleveland and the surrounding area. A short time later, he danced his way to the theaters in New York City.

After his debut on Broadway in 1927 in the musical The Sidewalks of New York broke Hope in 1933 by the grappende as Huckleberry Haines in the musical Roberta. During this performance he learned the singer Dolores Reade , with whom he married in 1934 .

Other comedy roles he played in Caught in the Draft (1941), Let's Face It (1943), The Paleface (1948), Fancy Pants (1950) and My Favorite Spy (1951).

Hope played leading roles in over fifty movies and appeared with supporting roles in fifteen other (the last one was Spies Like US in 1985).

In 1944 was the highest rated radio show in the US Hopes and in 1950 , he made his debut on television.

On 6 may 1941 Bob Hope performed for the first time on for American soldiers. He continued to entertain soldiers during the rest of the Second World War, the Korean war, the Viet Nam warand even in 1991 during the Gulf war. During his performances for these soldiers, he was very committed and he almost always wore army clothing as a sign of support and admiration for his audience.

The comedian amassed a fortune, which he invested in real estate. Forbes magazine once estimated his assets at more than $ 500 million.


He had five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Of president George w. Bush referred to him he got the Bob Hope American Patriot Award.

He got five honoraryOscars for his particular humanitarian merits in 1940, 1944, 1952, 1959 and 1965.

The Academy Award for "best actor", however, was never awarded to him.

Every American army's part he got awards for the more than 40 Christmas tours he made along the troops.

He was honorary Commander of the order of the British Empire and got a People to People Award of President Dwight d. Eisenhower, the Congressional Gold Medal by President John f. Kennedy and the Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon b. Johnson.
