Bruce Hornsby ( Williamsburg (Virginia) , November 23 1954 ) is an American singer and pianist . He is best known for the hit The Way it is from 1986 . He was in the past, occasionally a member of Grateful Dead . In recent years, Hornsby his career turned a less commercial musical direction.

Bruce Hornsby is a distant relative of baseball legend Rogers Hornsby . He has several times occurred with a bust of the player on his piano.

Hornsby's father was a successful businessman in Williamsburg, which among other things has been active in the oil sector, and later in real estate. Today, the family is still a major brokerage, which Bruce's brother (who is also a time Bruce has played band), Director.

In his youth Hornsby grew up with different kinds of music. He studied music at the University of Richmond , Berklee College of Music in Boston , Massachusetts and at theUniversity of Miami in Coral Gables , where he graduated in 1977. He spent some time in Los Angeles as a studio musician, before he moved back to Virginia.

Hornsby scored a hit in 1986 with The Way it is . This number, which he and his band 'The Range' sang in the Netherlands was a number one hit , and was also in many other countries, including the United States, at number 1.
