Genre Description[]
One of the parents of all genres of quintessentially American music, especially Rock, Pop and R&B, Blues music evolved out of many sources, including Negro spirituals and Folk music. In a way, Blues is a form of folk, being a music of the people, but the styles of music we typically think of Blues and folk are much different. Blues typically uses a 12-bar chord progression. Like Jazz (somewhat of a brother-genre to the Blues), it's a genre that started out maligned and derided, but has become one of the exhalted genres of "Serious" music. Often times the lyrics can be rather dirty, although not always. It's one of the longest-lived genres of American music, if not the longest, and a lot of interesting stuff is being done today with the genre.
