Joseph Saddler (Barbados, 1 January 1958) is nicknamed as dj Grandmaster Flash with one of the pioneers of hip hop. During the 1970s in the Bronx (New York) he makes a plate with two copies of new songs by the drum solos (breaks) to each other to mix. Itself claims to be the first that he did this, although DJ Kool Herc there according to many already was doing.
Grand master Flash is considered to be the first to repeat these breaks by the plate with his hand to push forward and backward. He calls this technique ' cutting ', later called the 'scratch'. He is also the first dj who while running stunts, such as standing backwards and the plates behind his back to scratching.
The "Apache Break" is one of the most famous breaks that Grand master Flash created. This is based on the song "Apache" by The Incredible Bongo Band.
With his group The Furious Five he brings in 1981 The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel , on which he heard his ' dj skills '. In 1982 they score a hit with The Message, in which about the difficulties of life in the black ghetto's geRAPS is. This is considered by many to be the first hip hop record with a strong social message.
In 1983 , he performed in the documentary film Wild Style.
In 2007 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five became the first hip hop group ever who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
