Jaroslav Ježek

Jaroslav Ježek (Prague, 25 september 1906 – 1 January New York, 1942) was a Czech composer, pianist , conductorand dramaturg.

Life Course

Ježek was already in young age. On 3-year-old age he became to the right eye and the left eye blind since birth he had cataracts. He was deaf by scarlet fever. He studied at the Prague Conservatory, includingKarel Boleslav Jirák at composition (1891-1972) until 1927. He studied in the master classes of Josef Suk and Alois Hába and further studies for piano at Šímy Albína. He then went on to also briefly in Paris.

His name is permanently connected to the Liberated Theatre (Osvobozené divadlo) in Prague. His compositions on texts by Jan Werich and Jiří Voskovec were a fixed part of the program of the revue-like performances in this theatre. This kind of theatre is very popular so far in the entire Czech Republic. As an employee of a theatre company, he relocated to Vienna, he emigrated on January 8, 1939 together with Werich and Voskovec to the United States. He died on January 1, 1942 in the Cornell Hospital due to a serious illness.

Style

Ježek is a composer between popular music and modern music. As a representative of the avant-garde, he is little known. He wrote around 30 works, which him like Ervín Schulhoff and Pavel Haas characterize as typical representative of the Czech modern music. But his greatest fame he acquired in the field of jazz music and modern Czech dances such as "svět British Royal Air Force", "Hej rup", "strašlivá", "Píseň o Nebe after zemi Golemovi Šaty dělaj člověka", "", "you", "Život ve Klobouk křoví jen náhoda Babička", "Mary" ... and above all its "Bugatti step". He wrote around 30 plays between 1928 to 1938 for the Liberated Theatre (Osvobozené divadlo) for which he as composer, arranger, Music Director, pianist and playwright in a person was working.

He work also known as a composer of film music.
