James Travis Reeves ( Galloway (Texas) , August 20 1923 - Nashville (Tennessee) , July 31 1964 ) aka Gentleman Jim was an American country singer who was known for his warm velvet voice .

Reeves was born in Galloway in Texas as the youngest in a family of nine children. His father died when he was 1. Despite his love for music, he began a career as aballplayer , which in 1947 came to a premature end by an ankle injury. He got a job as a DJ at a radio station in Louisiana, and in 1953 he recorded his first hit record,Mexican Joe , that was a number 1 listing. In 1955 he signed a contract with RCA and joined the Grand Ole Opry . By the end of the 50s was the Rock 'n' Roll and Reeves shifted under the influence of Chet Atkins style are the pure country which in that direction. Reeves was - with Patsy Cline - one of the first to the Nashville sound brought.
Jim Reeves was one of the first with 'talking' close- microphone technique worked, something his voice extra good did come out. This he did with the recording engineer for RCA as high quarrel he between 1962 and early 1964 made no more recordings.
Jim Reeves' plane was on the way home in Nashville on July 31, 1964 in a heavy storm. Both occupants, Reeves as a pilot and a friend, Dean Manuel , died.

Jim Reeves has also released an album containing only songs in Afrikaans entitled Jy Is My Sweet Ling .
Even long after his death Reeves has gotten hit list prices; the latest in a duet with Patsy Cline I fall to pieces in 1982 . All this was possible because of the massive amounts of unreleased studio material and the careful management by his wife.
