Jon Douglas Lord (Leicester, 9 June 1941 – London, 16 July 2012) was a British musician, who is famous as keyboardist for the rock band Deep Purple.

Biography

From his ninth Lord played piano, first with the goal to become a classical pianist, but he found many more attractive jazz and blues music. He started at the Bill Ashton Combo, and after various wanderings, with the Kinks and the Flowerpotmen he came to Boz and Roundabout Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice against.

From an interview with him on the dvd "The making of machine head" reports Jon that he was mesmerized by the sound of the distorted guitar by Ritchie Blackmore. He wanted his Hammond-B3 could also make it sound like a guitar. He closed the exit of his organ to the guitar input of a Marshallguitar amplifier. Then he turned the gain of the preamp stairs and the characteristic ripping sound of his Hammond was born. For example, this can be heard in the intro to "Lazy" on the album "Machine head".

Jon Lord left Deep Purple after their tour of the United Kingdom, in February 2002. He wanted to devote himself more among classical music with the Durham Concerto.

On 9 August 2011, Lord know to fight against pancreatic cancer. This month also appears his solo album Live that is included with a full Symphony Orchestra in Bucharest. On 16 July 2012 Lord died of a pulmonary embolism, after a long illness.
