Biography[]
Mercury was started in 1945 in Chicago and early-on, established themselves as a major label due to their fast-turnaround of pressed records. Mercury released records in all genres, but became especially known as a country label. In 1961, they were bought by Phillips, and later Polygram. This allowed them to control Casablanca, making Mercury move into a pop label exclusively. Later, they were bought by Universal and was merged into the Island Def Jam Music Group. In 2014, Island ended up absorbing Mercury, disbanding the label along with IDJMG and using the brand only for reissues. In 2022, fellow Universal label, Republic bought Mercury from Island and relaunched it as its own subsidiary.
