Biography[edit | edit source]

Mute was started in 1978 as a label to release Daniel Miller's band's single, although it expanded into being one of the big indie labels in the UK with many of its signings in the 1980s. They signed some big Dance and New Wave acts, which brought sales and credibility to the label, as well as some experimental, avant-garde acts, which gave Mute a reputation of being willing to take a chance and put out things that were of a certain level of quality. In this way, Mute became one of those labels that some people would buy anything from, just because it was on Mute, similar to labels like Sub Pop. In 1999, it got bought by EMI, as part of their long-running distribution deal with Virgin.
