Artist: eels
Album: Beautiful Freak
Song Notes: eels' first breakout hit single (though E'd had a minor solo hit or two), this is a really great, catchy song. I like the sampled (or faux-sampled) intro leading into the toy piano. Just really well produced and really well written. This is one of the tracks that makes me wonder, as well, if E was influenced by David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest on this record—the titular prhase is referenced in that tome (though it's admittedly not a necessarily original phrase), and both the book and another song on Beautiful Freak make reference to someone looking like Winston Churchill in drag. Hm. I'd like to ask E about that some day. - Rev. Syung Myung Me
