Review[]
The brainchild of Athens, GA’s Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal, is a psychedelic pop band that owes as much to Frank Zappa as it does to The Beach Boys. Named in the wake of a broken romance with a girl from Montreal, the band quickly progressed through the late 90s and early 00s into the theatrical and crisp sound that it encompasses in this album. The genres on this album alone are plentiful, including disco-funk, hard rock, cosmic country, power-pop and acoustic balladry to name a few. The artwork is the simplest explanation I can give to describe the album as a whole; a collage of colorful expressions all plastered in front of a setting sun and culminating with a kneeling skeleton praying to a holy light on the disc itself. Musical insanity aside, this is a amiable and good-natured record that can be enjoyed by anyone who is open enough to give it a complete listen. Mpardaiolo
