Soul Coughing was an American alternative rock band composed of vocalist/guitarist Mike Doughty (also known as M. Doughty), keyboardist/sampler Mark Degli Antoni, bassist Sebastian Steinberg and drummer Yuval Gabay. Soul Coughing developed a devout fanbase and garnered largely positive response from critics. Soul Coughing's sound was a willfully idiosyncratic mix of improvisational jazz grooves, oddball samples, hip hop, electronics, and noisy experimentalism."  The band's sound was described by Doughty as "deep slacker jazz."

The band formed in 1992 and debuted 2 years later with their first studio album, Ruby Vroom. They broke up in 2000 after years of feuding over songwriting credits and publishing.

Band History[]

Soul Coughing was an experimental band that often had strains of jazz and Beat Poetry in their sound. They would use an upright bass, an interesting, metallic drum sound, and lots of strange samples (including frequent use of Raymond Scott loops). After three records, they broke up in 2000, and Mike Doughty has had some success as a solo artist, though his solo work is more straight-forward folk-rock.
