History[Edit][]
Noel and Mike Hogan, two brothers from Limerick, Ireland in 1990 started a band with drummer Fergal Lawler. The band was originally named The Cranberry Saw Us, a pun on cranberry sauce. Dolores O'Riordan auditioned for the role of lead-singer and won, and wrote the text for "Lamb". Her voice, ranging from sharp to powerful and from top to bottom, is the essential characteristic of the sound of the band.
Their homemade demo tape did well locally and the band soon took a strap on what got a lot of popularity and interest of the critics. After a big fight over The Cranberries, signed to Island Records music contractors. After an unsuccessful first single, the band broke with her manager. Their second single, Lamar, and their debut albumEverybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? was a huge success in the United States and later also in Britain. The next single, Dreams, was also a hit and reached 14th in the u.s. charts.
In 1994 married Dolores O'Riordan with Don Burton, the tour manager for the band. O'Riordan's status as front woman of the band started to cause tensions within the group while No Need To Argue, their second album, was produced. On this album, the hit single Zombieis also a protest against the violence between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland in the 1990s. The album brought the band an immense popularity across Europe and the us.
While there were already rumors about O'Riordan's impending departure from the band, the album was released To The Faithful Departed . The album sold well, despite some negative reviews, but not as good as the previous album. During the subsequent years went more and more rumors about the possible break-up of the band and was a great tour cancelled. In 1999 the album Bury The Hatchet came from.
In 2001 , the band released the album Wake Up And Smell The Coffee out. It debuted at number 46 in the u.s. charts.
A "Best Of ..."-compilation called Stars was released in 2002, along with a dvd with innovative music videos, which even in the prices have fallen. [source?]
In 2004 , the band members announced they would take a break to give attention to their individual careers. Dolores O'Riordan had earlier that year the title song from the film The Passion of The Christ Sung, Ave Maria. Her solo album Are You Listening? , was released on 7 May 2007. Noel Hogans new project is the "Mono Band".
The Cranberries have decided to postpone the next album. After more than twelve years of incessant tours and promotions, more than 38 million albums sold and given concerts for hundreds of thousands of fans from all over the world, found the band that it was time for a break.
In August 2009, Dolores O'Riordian her second solo album from No Baggage . Dolores and the original band members were also known to have for the first time in seven years would come back together for a live tour, which began in late 2009 and early 2010 in North America came to Europe. On March 23, 2010 were The Cranberries in the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam.
On 27 February 2012 appeared, for the first time in over eleven years, a new studio album: Roses.
