Review: London-based duo Psapp is on the cusp of indie-superstardom. Barely three years old, producer/programmer/studio wizard Carim Clasmann and sultry vocalist Galia Durant have already label-hopped their way to international distribution with Domino, put out a number of quirky EPs and an addictive full-length, penned the theme song to the immensely popular hospital drama #234587, Grey’s Anatomy, and also found their music soundtracking other hype-hits like Nip/Tuck and some show called The OC. But most importantly, their music falls into the indie-electro-acoustic-pop genre, utilizing the best (worst?) characteristics of other popular bands like The Postal Service, Architecture in Helsinki and Broadcast. And as if on cue, here comes the sophomore full-length featuring their now polished and concise sound set and ready to grace sterling white ear buds everywhere. Much like Architecture, Psapp enlists an attic full of bright sounding toys and odd, clunking bric-a-brac cleverly programmed by Clasmann into highly catchy sequences and curious collages. Durant’s voice is a cross between Broadcast’s Trish Keenan and Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier (can you ask for much more?), and her lyrics tend to ride that perfect line between (p)sappy poignancy and thanks to the background music, uplifting optimism. Psapp’s indie-elecropop mosaic is far from breaking any new ground in this day and age, but more importantly, they have an audience idly waiting and hungry… world domination is imminent. Mpardaiolo
