In 2011, Disturbed announced that its band would be going on a hiatus. By January 2014, vocalist David Draiman, guitarist Dan Donegan, and drummer Wengren met for dinner and discussed their plans about developing new material for their next album. Bassist John Moyer was not present during the dinner as he was doing other projects.
