History

The Winner Takes It All originally had the title "The Story of my Life". The song was, like all ABBA songs, written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. The singing is in this issue of Agnetha Fältskog. The lyrics of the song seem to save on the divorce between Ulvaeus and Fältskog in 1979. However, this is denied by both members.Ulvaeus says that the basis of the song "the experience of a divorce, but a fictional. In our case there was no winner or loser. Many people think that the song is reality, but that is not the case ".

In Britain The Winner Takes It All was voted best song by ABBA (1999) and separation as favorite number (2006). Both votes were organized by Channel Five.

The Winner Takes It All ABBA was the sixth number-one single in the Top 40 and the seventh in the National Charts. The song is the most successful ABBA-hit in the Top 40 and the hit of the year in 1980. The song was also chosen to Alarm disc. In the national Charts, the number 5 weeks in first place. Dancing queen was only in it longer on number one, namely 7 weeks. In the Top 100 sales list of 1980was The Winner Takes It All in ninth place. Also in the United Kingdom the song came in first place, it was the eighth ABBA-Song, which earned this honor. In Ireland, Belgium and South Africa was also the number-1 place. In the United States came to place the number eight, with which it was ABBA's fourth and final top 10 hit in that country.

Trivia

• The song was included in the musical Mamma Mia!, in which it is sung by Donna. The context of the story is that Donna still loves Sam, but cannot forgive him for what he has done to her. In the film Mamma Mia!is the song sung by Meryl Streep. In the Dutch version (with Simone Kleinsma) called this song: "the winner has the power"
