"When I'm Dead and Gone" is the debut single by English folk rock band McGuinness Flint. It was released in October 1970 as the lead single from their self-titled debut studio album.
Background[]
"When I'm Dead and Gone" is written by members Bernard Gallagher and Graham Lyle, who both later leave the group in 1972 to form the duo Gallagher and Lyle. The song is inspired by the life of Robert Johnson, a blues guitar legend (Hey there, ladies, Johnson's free). The title of the song is a line from "Me and the Devil Blues" by Johnson.
McGuinness would admit that it was a good idea to bring out the single around Christmas, which pushed the sales.
The song was covered a number of times. Phil Everly and names it once on Status Quo. There are also versions known from Def Leppard and James Last.
