− | The debut album from Ariana Grande, 2013's Yours Truly, is a surprisingly sophisticated and unique showcase for the Nickelodeon sitcom star's soulful R&B vocals. As the character Cat Valentine on several Nickelodeon television shows including I Carly, Victorious, and Sam & Cat, Grande developed a huge fan following and the expectations were high for her debut album. Three years in the making and held up by numerous delays, Yours Truly lives up to those expectations. Produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Yours Truly is an impeccably engineered affair. In fact, one would be hard-pressed to find a better platform for Grande's voice. A resonant singer gifted with a lithe affinity for both high-energy melisma and gentle balladry, Grande often brings to mind the intonations of Mariah Carey. Of course, with Edmonds at the helm, along with a bevy of commercially minded songwriters, the Carey comparisons are unavoidable and most likely intentional. Thankfully, Grande has the chops to pull it off, and Yours Truly makes the most of her talent. To these ends, tracks like the opening "Honeymoon Avenue", with its sophisticated orchestral intro, and the bright and funky "You'll Never Know" sound like lost early-'90s R&B hits. Though Grande has the talent to carry the album on her own steam, several tracks team her with guest performers, including the single "The Way", which features rapper Mac Miller; "Right There" with Big Sean; and "Popular Song", featuring MIKA. Ultimately, cuts like "Baby I" and the jazz-inflected showstopper "Almost Is Never Enough", featuring the Wanted's Nathan Sykes, are bravura pop recordings that bring to mind the best of the '90s and of now. |

− | [Verse 1] |
− | Baby, I got love for thee so deep inside of me |
− | I don’t know where to start |
− | Yeah, yeah |
− | I love you more than anything |
− | But the words can’t even touch what’s in my heart |

− | [Pre-Chorus 1] |
− | When I try to explain it, I be sounding insane |
− | The words don’t ever come out right |
− | I get all tongue-tied and twisted |
− | I can’t explain what I’m feeling |
− | And I say baby, baby (oh-woah, oh-woah), baby |
− | |||
− | [Chorus] |
− | (Baby, I) Oh baby, oh baby, my baby |
− | (Baby, I) Oh baby, baby, I |
− | (Baby, I) All I’m tryna say is you’re my everything, baby |
− | But every time I try to say it, words, they only complicate it |
− | Baby, baby (oh-woah, oh-woah) |
− | |||
− | [Verse 2] |
− | Baby, I’m so down for you |

− | Straight up |
− | You got me all in |
− | How could I not be? |
− | I sure hope you know (I sure hope you know) |

− | If it’s even possible, I love you more than the word “love” can say, yeah |
− | It’s better not explaining |

− | If you wanna party, if you, if you wanna party |

− | You got it, you got it, babe |
− | You got it, you got it, babe |
− | |||
− | [Verse 1: Big Sean & Ariana Grande] |
− | Okay, this, this, this for my number one girl who got the top spot title |
− | Spent a hour in the bathroom, walked out looking like a model |
− | God, doing what you do, got me right there with Apollo on the moon |
− | Who needs genies in a bottle, girl, if they already got you? |
− | Boy, you make me feel so lucky |
− | Finally the stars align |
− | Never has it been so easy to be in love |
− | And to give you this heart of mine |
− | |||
− | [Pre-Chorus 1: Ariana Grande] |
− | You know what I need |

− | And I’ll never let you go |
− | |||
− | [Chorus: Ariana Grande] |
− | You should know I’m never gonna change |
− | I’m always gonna stay |
− | You call for me, I’m right there (right there) |
− | Right there (right there) |
− | 'Cause you listen and you care |
− | You’re so different |
− | No one compares |

− | You got it, you got it, babe |
− | You got it, you got it, baby |
− | |||
− | [Verse 2: Ariana Grande] |
− | And I get butterflies, just thinking |
− | About you boy, you’re on my mind |
− | Sometimes I catch myself daydreaming |
− | Lost in your eyes and I lose all track of time |

− | [Verse 3: Big Sean & Ariana Grande] |
− | Now, if all fell through, would you catch me before the pavement? |
− | If my Benz turned back to Public Transportation, would you still be at home for me with the candles waiting |
− | And get my mind back adjacent to the place of a young visionary? |
− | A player too, you know I have some girls missionary |
− | My black book and numbers thicker than the dictionary and Bible |
− | I got it recycled |
− | I love and I like you |
− | Five course meals, even though you don’t mind a drive-thru |
− | That’s why I got you |

− | Now you finally tell me how you feel |

− | All the drama, boy, it’s overkill |
− | Don’t get mad at me 'cause you’ve been replaced |

− | [Pre-Chorus] |
− | But if you woulda manned up, put your hand up, stand up |

− | You will never know what we could have been |

− | <poem> |
− | [Verse 1: Ariana Grande] |
− | I'd like to say we gave it a try |
− | I'd like to blame it all on life |
− | Maybe we just weren't right |
− | But that's a lie, that's a lie |
− | |||
− | [Pre-Chorus: Ariana Grande] |
− | And we can deny it as much as we want |
− | But in time our feelings will show |
− | 'Cause sooner or later we'll wonder why we gave up |
− | The truth is, everyone knows |
− | |||
− | [Chorus: Ariana Grande] |
− | Almost, almost is never enough |
− | So close to being in love |
− | If I would have known that you wanted me the way I wanted you |
− | Then maybe we wouldn't be two worlds apart |
− | But right here in each others arms |
− | And we almost, we almost knew what love was |
− | But almost is never enough |
− | |||
− | [Verse 2: Nathan Sykes] |
− | If I could change the world overnight |
− | There'd be no such thing as goodbye |
− | You'd be standing right where you were |
− | And we'd get the chance we deserve, oh |
− | |||
− | [Pre-Chorus: Nathan Sykes] |
− | Try to deny it as much as you want |
− | But in time our feelings will show |
− | 'Cause sooner or later we'll wonder why we gave up |
− | The truth is everyone knows |
− | |||
− | [Chorus: Ariana Grande & Nathan Sykes] |
− | Almost, almost is never enough |
− | So close to being in love |
− | If I would have known that you wanted me the way I wanted you |
− | Then maybe we wouldn't be two worlds apart |
− | But right here in each others arms |
− | And we almost, we almost knew what love was |
− | But almost is never enough |
− | |||
− | [Bridge: Ariana Grande & Nathan Sykes] |
− | Huh-huh, baby |
− | You know, you know, baby |
− | Almost, is never enough, baby |
− | You know, hey |
− | And we can deny it as much as we want |
− | But in time our feelings will show |

− | 'Cause sooner or later we'll wonder why we gave up |

− | [Chorus: Ariana Grande & Nathan Sykes] |

− | |||
− | <poem> |
− | [Verse 1: Both] |
− | You were the popular one, the popular chick |
− | It is what it is, now I'm popular-ish |
− | Standing on the field with your pretty pompoms |
− | Now you're working at the movies selling popular corn |
− | I could have been a mess but I never went wrong |
− | Cause I’m puttin' down my story in a popular song |
− | Ahh, I said I'm putting down my story in a popular song |
− | |||
− | [Pre-Chorus: Both] |
− | My problem, I never was a model |
− | I never was a scholar, but you were always popular |
− | You were singing all the songs I don't know |
− | Now you're in the front row, cause my song is popular |
− | |||
− | [Chorus: MIKA] |
− | Popular, I know about popular |
− | It's not about who you are or your fancy car |
− | You're only ever who you were |
− | Popular, I know about popular |
− | And all that you have to do, is be true to you |
− | That’s all you ever need to know |
− | |||
− | [Post-Chorus: Both] |
− | So catch up, cause you got an awful long way to go |
− | So catch up, cause you got an awful long way to go |
− | |||
− | [Verse 2: Both] |
− | Always on the lookout for someone to hate |
− | Pickin' on me like a dinner plate |
− | You hid during classes and in between 'em |
− | Dunk me in the toilets now it's you that cleans them |
− | You tried to make me feel bad with the things you do |
− | It ain't so funny when the joke's on you |
− | Ooh, the joke's on you |
− | Got everyone laughing, got everyone clapping, askin' |
− | How come you look so cool? |
− | Cause that’s the only thing that I learned at school, boy |
− | Uh huh, I said that’s the only thing that I learned at school |
− | |||

− | [Verse 1] |
− | I told you once, "Get out my life |

− | [Chorus] |
− | Oh, I'm gonna say things like "shut up and kiss me" |
− | Oh, tonight I'm gonna lose some things |

− | If you wanna party, put your hands up |
− | Put your hands up, put your hands up |
− | Don't play me, just kiss me |
− | Oh, tonight I’ll say things |
− | Don't play me, just kiss me, babe |
− | |||
− | [Verse 2] |
− | I could tell a lie |
− | Blame tonight |
− | Too many drinks |
− | So many reasons that some things are better left unsaid |

Yours Truly is the debut studio album by American singer Ariana Grande.
It was released on September 3, 2013.
Overview
The debut album from Ariana Grande, 2013's Yours Truly, is a surprisingly sophisticated and unique showcase for the Nickelodeon sitcom star's soulful R&B vocals. To these ends, tracks like the opening "Honeymoon Avenue," with its sophisticated orchestral intro, and the bright and funky "You'll Never Know" sound like lost early-'90s R&B hits. Though Grande has the talent to carry the album on her own steam, several tracks team her with guest performers, including the single "The Way," which features rapper Mac Miller; "Right There" with Big Sean; and "Popular Song," featuring Mika. Ultimately, cuts like "Baby I" and the jazz-inflected showstopper "Almost Is Never Enough," featuring the Wanted's Nathan Sykes, are bravura pop recordings that bring to mind the best of the '90s and of now.
